For the Glory of God Alone

Glori (1)

‘So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God’ 1 Corinthians 10:31

I recently learnt that Johann Bach, the famous composer, inscribed the Latin phrase ‘Soli Deo Gloria’ meaning ‘Glory to God alone’ at the end of his compositions which are still listened to and used widely today.

I love this! To think that someone who wasn’t celebrated for his work until long after his death, who had such God given talent and produced hundreds of amazing musical compositions, signed off each one of them with those three simple words. He left a message pointing to God as an example and a reminder for his peers and, little did he know, for so many future generations.

He apparently had a sense of God calling him from an early age and pursued his work with unimaginable energy to create music for the church. He clearly knew his purpose and his place and outside of his musical talents he was an honourable husband and father with 20 children! He lived his life, not seeking to make a name for himself but to give the glory back to God where it belongs.

The beauty of spotify is that all these years after he wrote them, with one click of a button I have been able to listen to his compositions until my heart is content for several weeks now. I have been trying to channel his inspiration! To remember to give all the glory to God alone as I work, as I rest and as I walk around my local area. I have to say, I have found it a very helpful reminder!

Let’s pray: Father God, we give you all the glory, you are the source of all creation and we are nothing without you. Help us to live our lives knowing our purpose in everything we do. Help our children and young people find this meaning and purpose from a young age and use their God given talents for the Glory of your Name. Amen
